How to do the Thruster

  1. Hold the bar or dumbbells in a front-rack position at the shoulders.
  2. Squat down to at least parallel, elbows up.
  3. Drive up explosively through the heels.
  4. Use that momentum to press the weight overhead.
  5. Lower back to the shoulders and flow into the next rep.

What muscles does the thruster work?

The thruster is a full-body move: the squat drives the quads and glutes, the press hits the front delts and triceps, and the core braces to transfer force from the legs to the overhead lockout. It's why thrusters are so metabolically demanding.

Is the thruster good for conditioning or strength?

Both. Heavy thrusters build leg and shoulder strength, while lighter, higher-rep sets become brutal conditioning because they use so much muscle at once and spike the heart rate.

Thruster vs overhead press?

The overhead press isolates the shoulders and triceps from a dead stop; the thruster uses leg drive to press more weight and adds a full squat, making it a full-body power and conditioning move rather than a pure shoulder builder.
