Frequently asked questions

What muscles do shrugs work?

Shrugs primarily target the upper trapezius, the muscle running from the neck to the shoulders, with the forearms working to hold the load. They build the visible 'traps' above the shoulders.

Should you roll your shoulders when shrugging?

No. Shrug straight up and down — rolling the shoulders adds no benefit and can irritate the shoulder joint. A brief pause at the top is more effective.

Do deadlifts already work traps enough?

Heavy deadlifts train the traps isometrically, but direct shrugs add more focused volume for upper-trap size if that's a priority.
