Frequently asked questions

What muscles does the overhead press work?

The overhead press primarily works the front and side deltoids and the triceps, with the traps, upper chest and core all contributing to stabilise and finish the lift.

Does overhead press build big shoulders?

Yes — it's one of the best mass and strength builders for the deltoids, especially the front and side heads. Pair it with lateral raises for complete shoulder development.

Is overhead pressing bad for your shoulders?

For most people with normal mobility, pressing overhead is safe and healthy. Pain usually comes from leaning back excessively or limited shoulder mobility — fix those first.
